What is Fencing?
Olympic fencing is a competitive sport that features skilled combat between two opponents using one of three types of swords: foil, épée, or sabre. Originating from traditional European swordsmanship, fencing in the Olympics adheres to a set of rules established by the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime (FIE). Each weapon has its own unique set of rules and target areas. Foil targets the torso, épée allows hits on the entire body, and sabre targets the upper body. Competitors wear protective gear, including a mask, jacket, and glove, to ensure safety. Matches are held on a strip, or "piste," and points are scored by making contact with the opponent's target area using the tip (foil and épée) or the edge (sabre) of the blade. Olympic fencing requires agility, strategy, and precision, making it a dynamic and engaging sport for both participants and spectators.
